Text: Acts 10:34-43 for Easter Sunday, Lectionary Series A

Download a PDF of the Word One Bible Study for Easter Sunday First Reading.

Participants will understand what difference Easter made in the lives of Peter, Cornelius and in their own lives.

Bibles for all participants
One 3x5 card for each participant
Paper, pencils and pens
Copies of the hymn "I Know that My Redeemer Lives"

Group Guidelines
Break into groups of 5-6 persons. The leader is the tallest person in the group.

Getting Started
Think about the Easter traditions in your family. Write down three things that you do in your family at Easter time. Your list could include serious things, fun things, things you eat, etc. When all have finished, share your list with your group. Notice things that are similar and things that are different.

Getting into Scripture
The Resurrection of Jesus is only one of the actions of God in this passage, although the others are related to it. Read Acts 10:34-43 and do the following as a group.
List the things other than the Resurrection that God does in this passage. When your list is complete, assign one event to each person in the group and have that person tell about it and explain how it is related to the Resurrection.
List the things that people did or do in this passage. Choose one of the things that people did in the passage and show how it is related to the Resurrection. Share your findings with your group.
Jesus gave His followers a great blessing as the result of His Resurrection. He also gave them a task to do in the world after His Resurrection. Peter showed that the Resurrection made a difference in His life by...
The blessings that are ours because of the Resurrection are...
The tasks that I am given because of the Resurrection are...
6. List five ways that you can be faithful to that task.

Reinforcing What Has Been Learned
Some believe that the Resurrection of Jesus has value only at death. This is not true. The Resurrection has power for our lives in the here and now and at death. They hymn "I Know that My Redeemer Lives" lists ways in which the Resurrection of Jesus is of value in the here and now. Read the hymn and choose the six blessings that are ours because of the Resurrection that are most important to you and rank them in order of importance from 1-6. Share your list with the persons in your group.

Write a prayer on the 3x5 card. Thank God for raising Jesus from the dead and for the difference that the Resurrection has made in your life. Prayer for a stronger faith to live out your life in the light of the Resurrection. Challenge yourself to use this prayer during this Easter season. Let those who wish use their prayers for closing devotions. Then sing all six stanzas of the hymn.
